Food FOMO: Finding Freedom from Food Rules

In 2008, I was diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease. In 2023, I added type 2 diabetes to my medical rap sheet.

Both illnesses come with serious food restrictions.

  • Crohn’s? Say goodbye to insoluble fiber, fat, and hard-to-digest meats.
  • Diabetes? Carbs are basically off-limits if I want to keep my blood sugar (and body) healthy.

For years, food was my go-to for everything: entertainment, comfort, rewards, and emotional stuffing. Following my Crohn’s diet felt impossible—so I gave up on it. The consequences weren’t worth the emotional toll.

But diabetes? That’s a whole other beast. The stakes are way higher. Ignoring this diet could have life-altering consequences, and the realization hit hard. I went through a heavy depression, especially when I saw other people enjoying foods I couldn’t have. Food FOMO is real, y’all.

Here’s the kicker: I learned that insulin and other diabetes meds don’t heal the disease—they just manage the symptoms. The damage continues unless I take control.

I’ve done it before.

With Reiki, affirmations, and mindset shifts, I put Crohn’s into remission. My last colonoscopy was so clean that my gastroenterologist said, “If I didn’t know your history, I’d say you don’t have Crohn’s.” (Side note: there’s no “cure” for Crohn’s, so this was HUGE.)

So, I knew I needed to tackle diabetes differently.

The first step? Boundaries. BIG ones. I stopped going to events centered around food. People didn’t get it—and that’s okay. My health matters more than their opinions.

Then, in October, I pushed myself. I went to a bridal shower—knowing the food would be off-limits.

And you know what?

For the first time, I didn’t feel left out. Not even a little.

Turns out, food FOMO doesn’t stand a chance when you prioritize you.
